Ice cream, sorbet, gelato, soft serve...However you take yours, my round-up of the best places to get your scoop fix in Istanbul should keep you happy until winter. Discover the best ice cream in Istanbul below, including plenty of dairy-free and vegan options.

Yaşar Usta’nın Dondurması

Yaşar Usta’nın Dondurması

Ice cream is a mere dessert for many of us sold by large food companies in colourful packages. However, the true story of the ice cream has nothing to do with this. There is a master ice-cream man who has been producing ice cream for many years in Bostancı, İstanbul: Yaşar Usta. He has been in the business of ice cream making for a full 40 years. He learnt how to make fine ice cream from an Albanian man called Hıfsı Yorgun in Bostancı Kasaplar Çarşısı (Butchers’ Bazaar of Bostancı). For 40 years now, he has continued to make ice cream by truly sticking with the recipes of this taste.

If you love 'Sorbets' which are vegan ice-creams made with fruits and sugar, this is the right place for you. There are so many sorbet options such as melon, lemon, grape, damson plum and etc. Yaşar Usta has several ice-cream parlours, other than his first shop at Bostancı, throughout the city, included Fatih, Taksim and Levent. Find the closest to you from its website.

Cremeria Milano

Cremeria Milano

Cremeria Milano is probably the best gelato parlour in Istanbul. They use high quality and fresh raw products and produce real Italian style ice-cream. They adapt their style to the taste and traditions of Turkey. They use authentic Italian recipe with local ingredients and preparation. My favorite is the bitter chocolate ice cream.

They have stylish shops at Nişantaşı, Taksim, Ortaköy, Etiler as well as at Emaar Square Mall, the brand-new luxury shopping centre at the Anatolian side.

Mini Dondurma at Bebek

Mini Dondurma at Bebek

As its name suggests, Mini Dondurma (literally meaning ‘tiny ice cream’) takes up a space of only four-square metres. There are long queues in front of the ice cream shop, especially at weekend, since its establishment in 1968 to honour the ice cream makers’ great efforts and talent. And with an extensive list of flavours like rose, gum, mulberry, coffee, mint, blueberry, chestnut, orange, melon, walnut, rose and lokum ice cream, it’s no wonder Mini Dondurma is still as popular as ever after all these years! I particularly recommend the rose Turkish delight ice cream with vanilla.
